Les statues des apôtres miraculées devant l'atelier de restauration de la SOCRA

The Miraculous Statues of Notre-Dame de Paris ... in the Dordogne

The statues of the 12 apostles and the tetramorphs of the 4 evangelists, created by the architect Viollet-le-Duc, had been deposited only 4 days before the terrible fire that ravaged Notre-Dame de Paris on April 15, 2019. Originally located at the base of the spire of the cathedral, these copper sculptures repulsed with tin solders would not have resisted the furnace.

The 16 monumental works of art were deposited and entrusted to the company SOCRA in Marsac in the Dordogne to be restored.

Destined to be seen from afar, no one had had the opportunity to see them closely since their installation at the foot of the spire, in 1856.
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days on 21 and 22 September, SOCRA gave the public the exceptional opportunity to see and touch these statues in front of the restoration workshop.

The sculptures themselves are in relatively good condition, but the internal frame corroded by time had become fragile and needed to be redone or consolidated.
Their green color is due to the oxidation of copper. During the restoration they will be repainted in their original color, brown.

The sculpture depicting Saint Thomas has a peculiarity. In reality, it bears the face of Viollet-le-Duc, who had represented himself in the shoes of Saint Thomas, patron of the architects. This character was the only one looking at the arrow instead of being turned outward like all the other apostles. Saint Thomas only believes when he sees. Actually Viollet-le-Duc turned on his own work: "It's me who did it, I have to see it to believe it"!

The cock on the spire was also called "miracle". Indeed, everyone remembers that at the time of the fall of the burning building, it was thrown to the ground far from the flames. Dumped but not burned, it was also entrusted to SOCRA. For the moment, the intention is not to repair it so that it is the witness of this terrible event.
